The Lohmann Brown hens in the first Rondeel poultry house in Barneveld are faring well: courtesy of the artificial grass system of GardenGrass. The success of the initiative prompted the decision to install artificial grass in Rondeel’s second revolutionary poultry farm in Wintelre, in the province of Noord-Brabant (Netherlands).

The Rondeel facility is a unique housing concept for laying hens. The concept is the culmination of extensive research undertaken at Wageningen University, which set out to explore the options for a sustainable future for laying hen husbandry. The first Rondeel facility was opened in the Dutch town of Barneveld in April 2010. Construction of the second Rondeel facility commenced in September.
In a nutshell, the concept consists of night quarters and day quarters. The night quarters provide for the hen’s primary needs: eating, sleeping, resting and laying eggs. The day quarters are designed to meet the hen’s natural needs such as scratching and dust bathing. The Rondeel facility is the ultimate example of economic and corporate social responsibility: respect for animal welfare, the environment and economic gains.

The role of artificial grass in the Rondeel facility

The aim of the initiators was to introduce a true-to-nature concept into the hens’ day quarters. In other words: to simulate the hens’ natural outdoor environment indoors. Not natural grass, which would have a limited life span, but artificial grass. GardenGrass was the only supplier willing to take up the challenge of fitting the entire Day Quarters out with artificial grass, allowing the hens to move around freely, scratch and peck at the ground.

Initial results are encouraging, suggesting that the intended beneficial effects have been established: healthy, vibrant hens producing a high egg yield. Those positive results provided much of the impetus for introducing the second facility so soon after the first. This Rondeel facility will also be equipped with the GardenGrass system. A sustainable solution for an equally sustainable concept.

The Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare in the English county of Sussex installed 890 square metres of artificial turf. It is the first dog kennel to install artificial turf on such a large scale.

This is not the first time that artificial grass has been used at a dog kennel, but past experiments with the material were only on a small-scale and the turf was only installed in the runs for pregnant dogs. After all, artificial grass gives ‘mothers-to-be’ much more comfort and warmth than a cold concrete floor.

The Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare fitted its entire kennel with artificial turf last summer. The two main reasons were a desire to offer dogs more comfort, as was also being done on a smaller scale in numerous other kennels, and the desire to give the dog kennel a more pleasant appearance. After all, concrete is not only cold to the touch, but also gives a cold and hard impression. Artificial turf, on the other hand, has a very natural look. And an artificial turf surface gives the dog kennel a friendlier look & feel.

An additional reason that wasn’t really apparent until after the grass was installed was the easy maintenance of artificial turf. When nature calls, the urine simply disappears into the sandy bed surface and solid waste can be easily cleaned up. This keeps the kennel looking clean and hygienic.

After looking into all possible options, the kennel ultimately choose the TT LSR 10ND, a product consisting of durable fibres. Due to its stable and wear-resistant nature, this product is used often on tennis courts and golf courses. The owner of the kennel is extremely pleased with his choice. “The result is much better than we had expected. The artificial grass is incredibly well fitted, just like a carpet. And our staff is also very pleased with our decision. Visitors, too, are pleasantly surprised. And, perhaps most important of all, the dogs also appear to feel more comfortable on the artificial grass.”

This year’s ArchiFest award winning home at Lorong Kemunchup in Singapore uses GardenGrass as the their landscape turf of choice. Unlike past themes which had an architectural slant the focus of this year’s ArchiFest is to shift the focus towards a humanistic aspect such as live-ability and promoting a state of well being for its inhabitants. For this home GardenGrass artificial grass is installed as one of the elements that can create a relaxing environment, without the hassle of maintenance/watering and also a place for kids and pets to enjoy year round, without harming the environment. No matter the weather conditions.
